- U16 Boys through to West Mayo 'B' Final
U16 Boys West Mayo ‘B’ Semi-Final. Monday 3rd September 2018 Kilmeena vs Ballintubber Kilmeena travelled to Clogher to take on Ballintubber. At stake, a place in the West Mayo ‘B’ Final. On a pleasant sunny evening with just a light breeze, conditions were ideal for the game of football. A game best described as ‘having a bit of everything..........’ - with passages of great play inter-dispersed with poor play, a missed penalty, a disallowed goal, lots of injuries/knocks/stoppages (leading to several minutes of injury time before the final whistle) and ultimately a win for Kilmeena by the narrowest of margins. Ballintubber were first on the scoreboard, with a well taken point. Shortly afterwards, Ronan O’Donnell opened Kilmeena’s account with a point from play. In a scrappy opening period, the teams exchanged points to leave it 2 points to 3 points in favour of the home side. Then on the 10 minute mark, following some good build-up movement, Sean Prenty took possession of a pass and drilled the ball to the back of the Ballintubber net. Over the next 10 minutes or so, Kilmeena built on this lead with further points from Ian Murphy, Chris McGlynn and Mikey Hastings. Ballintubber did keep the scoreboard ticking over too, with 2 points from play. Just when it seemed like Kilmeena would retain a comfortable lead at the small whistle, Ballintubber scored a goal (on 27 minutes) and followed up with 2 further points. With the sides level in first half injury time, Kilmeena continued to work hard and were rewarded with the final point of the half from the boot of Kian Moore. Half time score: Kilmeena; 1 – 8, Ballintubber; 1 – 7 Kilmeena began the second half with renewed vigour and a run at the Ballintubber defence yielded a free which Ronan O’Donnell duly converted. Ballintubber responded with a point from play. And then, on the attack deep into Kilmeena territory, a Ballintubber player was brought down in the square – penalty kick for the home side. As Cathal Cawley focused, the Ballintubber penalty taker began his run, his strike and then the ball had deflected wide – off the upright (to great cheers from the travelling fans......). But Cawley had gone the right way, covering the gap into which the ball was targeted and so either way it was not to be at this juncture for Ballintubber. Both teams continued to exchange points. Then at the mid-point of the second half, Sean Prenty got on the end of a good ball into the Ballintubber backline and goaled, only for the goal to be disallowed – ref deemed it a ‘square ball’. Not deterred, Kilmeena pressed on but the next significant move came from the boot of a Ballintubber man; with a goal for the home side on the 20 minute mark. As in the first half, Ballintubber pressed the Kilmeena kickouts and notched up a couple of more scores. The game was in the melting pot coming up the end of normal time, but there were 4 to 5 minutes of injury time (due to several second half stoppages). Both teams had chances to take the spoils in this period and it was Kilmeena who seized the opportunity with a wonderfully converted free from the boot of Ronan O’Donnell deep into injury time. Ballintubber did have one final chance after this to level the game; when they were awarded a free. In or about 40 metres from the Kilmeena posts, it was always going to be a challenging kick and in the end Ballintubber’s effort went well wide. And there it ended with the referee’s whistle – Kilmeena by one point. Final score: Kilmeena; 1 – 15 Ballintubber; 2 - 11 West Mayo Final vs Breaffy on Tuesday 11th September, in Islandeady The panel present this evening comprised of the following: Cathal Cawley, Harry Sheridan, Adam Sheridan, Tom Smythe, Robbie Staunton, Ronan O’Donnell, Chris McGlynn, Kian Moore, Mark Hastings, Jason McGlynn, Ian Murphy, Mark Hastings, Sean Prenty, Ben Lennon, Chris McNally, Jack Walsh, Liam Moore, Rory Nolan, Daniel O’Malley
- Tens Second, Third Time
Our battling U10s finished runner-ups to Achill in our third final of three blitzes this season. The omens weren’t good: the rain descended just before our first game, against Achill. Despite a spirited performance against a side who were looking to win the Gearóid Murphy Memorial Cup for the first time, Achill ran out deserved winners. Next up were Kiltane who, despite mounting a stiff resistance, couldn’t keep out our lads forever and in the end, we ran out comfortable winners. No pep talk was needed for our boys against our third opponents of the day, Islandeady. From the throw-in we dominated, scoring freely, and with our win we faced Achill for the second time of the day, in the final. Unfortunately we couldn’t replicate the performance of the previous game and Achill again put in a magnificent performance, ensuring a well-deserved victory and winners of this years’ blitz. Our boys were fantastic ambassadors for the club and special mention must be made of our Player of the Tournament, Eoghan Cannon. Congratulations and thank you to Achill - popular winners and providers of the best sandwiches of any GAA club in west Mayo! Click here for photos of the U8's and U-10's in action on the day.

- Kilmeena V Westport U14 Girls League County Semi-Final 2018-08-30
With only a few hours notification of the change of venue, the Kilmeena U14 girls took to the field in Rice College at the earlier than expected time of 5pm on Friday evening, to take on Westport 'B' in the County U14 C league semi final. The teams met earlier in the summer in what was a very close encounter. On that occasion it was the Westport girls that emerged victorious by a single point. With much at stake this time round, it was a very determined Kilmeena team that sought retribution on Friday evening. Wet and humid conditions made the surface of the Rice College field very slippery which increased the level of difficulty of again a close encounter. Holding a narrow 2 point lead at half time the Kilmeena girls, urged on by some passionate words from management, stormed ahead at the beginning of the second half. Kilmeena went 7 points up at one stage before Westport came back at them with 2 goals and the final quarter developed into an enthralling competition. It was however to be Kilmeena's day, and when the final whistle sounded Kilmeena were 4 points ahead. The Kilmeena girls now go on to play the county final against Claremorris next Friday evening, the 7th of September, at a venue yet to be decided. Match report ; Annette Keane. Final score: Kilmeena 3 - 7 2 - 7 Westport ...more images HERE

A goal by Aoife Roache and points by Laura Moore, Jamie Geraghty and Sophie Flynn left the halftime score 4 -13 to 0 - 3. Kilmeena started the second half where they left off fighting for every ball and defending brilliantly. Some good saves by Susannah Horgan and controlled football ensured this Kilmeena team would reach their first final. Despite a slow start by the Kilmeena girls the game developed into an enthralling encounter between two evenly matched sides. Leading by 9 points at half time Belmullet must have thought they were home and dry but it was a very determined Kilmeena team that reemerged for the second half. - Minor Ladies v McHale Rovers 22nd August 2018
The minor ladies qualified for a county semi-final by beating McHale Rovers on Wednesday evening in Kilmeena. Kilmeena played with the aid of the wind in the first half and played some great free flowing football. Two goals by Shannon Bourke and one each by Katie Hogan and Aoife Lavelle put Kilmeena in control. Some great points by Hogan and Bourke were added to by Sarah Harper, Sophie Flynn and a long-range effort by Lily Brady. Kilmeena fought for every ball in the first period and went in leading by 4 – 06 to 0 – 04 at half time. McHale rovers piled on the pressure in the second period and reduced the margin to 2 points with 10 minutes remaining. Kilmeena defending heroically to stay in front. Katie Hogan and Shannon Bourke scored vital points to extend the lead in the closing minutes. Some great saves by Susannah Horgan and super defending by Dearbhla Grealis, Ava Ryder and Nina stood out. - Kilmeena V Castlebar Mitchels West Mayo U14A Chamionship Final 2018-08-22
On Wednesday evening, the Kilmeena lads made the short hop through the drumlins of Kilmeena and into the fertile land of Ballintubber ready to take on the lads from the county town of Castlebar. Having dispatched their local rivals Westport in the semi-final, was it truly possible for this group to be able to climb the mountain again having had to come down from their glorious semi-final win. A whole community was holding its breath in the hope that the lads could repeat their feats again, but with the realisation of how difficult it was going to be to topple the twin towers of Castlebar and Westport within a week. As the crowd filtered into the splendid Ballintubber ground, there was a quiet murmur of anticipation as neighbours greeted each other and wondered aloud was it truly possible to do it again? As the ball was thrown in it appeared that half the parish was there to cheer on their sons', brothers, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and neighbours. The game started as a cagey affair. Both teams were testing each other out, and it was clear that the Mitchels lands were not underestimating the Kilmeena lads. Mitchels were seeing a lot of the ball and Kilmeena were finding it hard to get a toe hold in the game. Finley Gibbons was introduced for the hard working Conor Kelly, and immediately began to pose a real threat at full forward and by the end of the first quarter, Kilmeena were two points in front thanks to points from Liam Moore, Finley Gibbons and Darragh Slattery (2) Then the boys in black and white were hit with a real sucker punch when Mitchels found the net with an opportunist strike. The game then swung dramatically in the Mitchels favour and they tagged on a further two points to open up a three-point gap heading towards the short whistle. However, back into the game stormed Kilmeena and high balls into the square were causing huge problems for the Mitchels full-back line. Two points resulted from the boot of Finley gibbons and Daniel Kelly to reduce the arrears to the minimum at the short whistle Halftime came and the expected onslaught from the Mitchels had not materialised and while not playing to their full capabilities, Kilmeena still looked solid in defence and threatening on the counter attack The second half opened and having recovered from the earlier concession of a goal; they were dealt another blow when the ball was finished to the net after some fine build-up play by the Mitchels forwards. The gap was now four points and for the next few minutes the Kilmeena lads were under serious pressure as the Mitchels sought to put the game beyond reach. This stage of the game was at it’s most critical as Mitchels put great energy into pulling away but found it impossible to shake off a team who just refused to go away. A smart save by Evan O’Donnell prevented the gap from getting wider. Kilmeena pulled it back to a 3 point gap and Mitchels extended it to four again, and again both teams swapped points as the game ebbed and flowed but the tide appeared to be going out for Kilmeena as it just seemed that the game was outside their grasp. In this period two pointed frees from Darragh Slattery were critical in keeping us in the game Into the final quarter and suddenly the boys in black and white caught fire. It was as if their sheer bloody-mindedness was telling them that there was no way they were throwing in the towel. While the margin was at 4, a couple of clear goal chances presented themselves for the Kilmeena lads, but luck was not on their side, but as the Kilmeena crowd sensed the game was there for the taking, and as the decibels rose from the stand, Conor Feehan started the revival with a dipping rasping drive that clipped the top of the crossbar to go over for a point. Then the ball fell in the square to Finley Gibbons and he sent the ball crashing into the net to leave a single point in it Now the game was on, but quick as flash the Mitchels sauntered forward and nonchalantly, they had put the margin out to three again. At this stage Mitchels were once again scenting blood, but the Kimeena boys stood firm and once again launched a raid down the right wing and after a fine move through several hands the ball fell to that man Gibbons again, and he sent a spectacular drive to the top left-hand corner. Only a few minutes were left, but it was evident that there was only one winner if the boys from the shore were brave enough. Now kilmeena were in complete control, and in their next attack Conal Gill picked up a pass on the left, cut inside, and sent a monster point high over the bar. In desperation, Mitchels launched their own raids but Colin Hastings and Jack Mulchrone made two vital interceptions to snuff out any possible effort on goal. Just as time was up Darragh Slattery had a chance to convert a free and the roar from the stand told the whole ground that it had sailed between the posts. Within seconds the final whistle blew to spark off celebrations in the Kilmeena camp. The Mitchels lads played their part in an epic encounter, but the sheer desire to never give up saw this Kilmeena team through in the last 15 minutes. There were fine performances all over the pitch. Evan O’Donnell was excellent in goals and his kick out variation always had the opposition guessing. Tom Hastings had a magnificent last 15 mins. Rian Kilcoyne, Donal Hastings, and Colin Hastings worked tirelessly in defence. Harry Sheridan had his usual steady performance as captain. Darragh Slattery and Liam Moore were up against a very skilful midfield pair but both really grew into the game and dominated the final exchanges. Conal Gill, when moved into the attack, posed a threat with his pace. Ciaran Kilcoyne worked really hard in attack but excelled when slotting into halfback. Daniel Kelly as always was excellent with his vision and positional play. Conor Feehan displayed his versatility and literally saw every blade of grass playing in four different positions. Conor Kelly worked really hard for possession. Brian Durkan was instrumental in winning a lot of turnover ball. Jack Mulchrone was his usual busy self in and around the middle and his work rate was telling in preventing Mitchels efforts on goal. Adam O’Grady worked well when he came on, and when introduced Finley Gibbons truly turned in a man of the match performance not solely because of his two superb goals but also because of the constant threat he was at full forward. The cup was presented to Harry Sheridan with plaudits for a great game produced by two evenly matched teams. Some time later, the convoy of cars snaked their way through the lanes of Ballintubber and Killawalla headed for the shores of Clew Bay with the cup in their grasp, and behind them, as the light dimmed behind the hedges in Ballintubber, there was no mistaking the twinkling lights of the illuminated scoreboard which read Kilmeena 2 - 11 Castlebar 2 - 9 Kilmeena Scorers; Finley Gibbons 2 - 2, Darragh Slattery 0 - 5, Liam Moore 0 - 1, Conal Gill 0 - 1, Daniel Kelly 0 - 1, Conor Feehan 0 -1 Kilmeena Team; Evan O’Donnell, Tom Hastings, Rian Kilcoyne, Donal Hastings, Colin Hastings, Harry Sheridan, Conal Gill, Darragh Slattery, Liam Moore, Conor Feehan, Ciaran Kilcoyne, Brian Durkan, Jack Mulchrone, Daniel Kelly, Conor Kelly. - Kilmeena V Knockmore C/Ship Quarter Final Mayo Junior A Championship 2018-08-18
Kilmeena seniors travelled to Ballina on the 18th of August to play Knockmore in the quarter-finals of the Mayo Junior A championship. We were all anticipating a close encounter as Knockmore are going well in division 4, and it was close last year in our league game. The evening was fine, but we knew Ernesto was on the way. As the game started the rain arrived, but it did not influence the game too much although the ball and ground did become greasy. But to credit both teams the game ebbed and flowed with both sides creating chances. Within 5 minutes Keith Ruthledge had the ball in the net for Knockmore. It was a sign of things to come. This Knockmore score sparked Kilmeena into action. Kilmeena tagged on a few points, and Kevin Ryder went close with a goal chance before Paul Groden finished well to the net. Neil Ryan got a second goal and Kilmeena were in total control although Knockmore still looked dangerous. Halftime score: Kilmeena 2 - 06 Knockmore 1 - 04. At this time it was lashing rain albeit without the promised hurricane. As the second half started, Kilmeena tagged on a few more points and looked as if they were headed for an easy win. But all of a sudden the tide turned. Knockmore scored a few points followed by a goal. Kilmeena looked as if they were in self-destruct mode once again. We could not seem to get out of our half of the field and all of a sudden the game was level. As the game went into injury time, Kilmeena went 2 points down. At this stage, Kilmeena used their get out of jail card and levelled with the last kick of the game. Knockmore were not too happy with the injury time played but taking 10 second-half substitutions and three pretty lengthy stoppages in the second half, 7 - 8 mins could not be considered to be excessive. Nobody was leaving the Stephanites Park as this epic encounter moved into extra time. The rain was still lashing down, and the daylight was at a premium. There was only one team in the game in extra time as the Kilmeena lads took complete control in both periods of added time, scoring 2 - 06 to 0 - 01 tells its own story. These Kilmeena lads knew they got out of Jail but also their will to win and never give up attitude is to be admired. Achill is next up in the County Semi-Final so your support would be appreciated by the management and team alike. KILMEENA ABU! Match report by Darren Madden. Final score; Kilmeena 4 - 18 2 - 13 Knockmore ...more match images HERE
- Kilmeena V Castlebar Mitchells U16 Boys Gaelic Football Championship – ‘A’ Semi-Final. Sunday 12th A
Having overcome Bohola Moy Davitts in a playoff five days previously, Kilmeena had created their own opportunity to challenge Castlebar Mitchells, for a place in the A-final. This would be Kilmeena’s biggest test of 2018, made no less challenging by having to contest this match at the home of Castlebar Mitchells (Pairc Josie Munnelly). The match was fixed for 12 noon. Weather conditions were excellent for this game of football – it was dry, sunny and pleasantly warm with little or no breeze. The ball was thrown in 12.05pm and from the off, Kilmeena took the challenge to Castlebar Mitchells. Although the Mitchells’ lads always looked dangerous on the attack, the Kilmeena defence stood firm during this opening period, depriving the Castlebar attack of any easy scoring chances. Proof of the Kilmeena resistance was evident on the scoreboard - after 10 minutes of play, the men in black & white had three points to show (all from play), whilst Castlebar Mitchells had registered just 2 points (both from frees). As the first half developed, the Mitchells lads were awarded a third free (converted) and on the 20 minute mark Castlebar Mitchells took the lead for the first time, with their first score from open play. During the final period of the first half, Castlebar Mitchells pressed on scoring three further points to Kilmeena’s one additional point, that from a converted free. Half time score of 7 points to 4 in favour of the home side. At just 3 points down by the small whistle, Kilmeena were in a decent position and but for some excellent shot-stopping by the Mitchells goalkeeper, Kilmeena should have been at least level at half time. Castlebar Mitchells made one change for the second half; bringing in their influential midfielder, Paddy Heneghan (who also plays Mayo minor). This change became one of two turning points in the game; as it allowed Castlebar Mitchells to gain a stronger foothold in the midfield area throughout the second half, yielding 3 points from play in the first five minutes for the hosts. Kilmeena continued to work hard and were awarded a free which Ronan O’Donnell duly converted. Then came the most productive move of the day for the men in black & white – a diagonal ball from Ian Murphy to Cillian O’Grady, who turned and kicked a further diagonal ball into the square to the right man in the right place at the right time....... Chris McGlynn made no mistake; beating his man to obtain possession and bury the ball in the back of the Castlebar Mitchells’ net. Seven minutes of the second half were gone but Kilmeena were not and the scoreline stood at 1 – 5 to 10 points in favour of the home side. However, in the following few minutes, all would change in favour of the men from Castlebar – a ball into the Kilmeena goalline area initially defended broke to a Mitchells man and a goal for Castlebar Mitchells. Within two minutes, the Mitchells were awarded a somewhat soft penalty which they duly converted and suddenly there was an eight point gap – too much for a tiring Kilmeena side to close, in the 15+ minutes that remained. Kilmeena continued to plough on, scoring one additional point from the boot of Sean Prenty after a nice layoff from Ben Lennon (who came on in the second half). But that was as good as it got and Castlebar Mitchells added four more points by the final whistle. Although Castlebar Mitchells were worthy winners on the day, the eleven point winning margin was somewhat flattering to the hosts, as Kilmeena spurned three separate goal scoring chances; any one or two of which if converted would have given a tighter winning margin for the hosts. Some great individual performances on the day but the Kilmeena defence must be commended for their trojan efforts at keeping the Mitchells men at bay for the vast majority of this contest. This was a fantastic display by the men from Kilmeena whose courageous efforts have delivered a performance far beyond the player resources of a junior club, pitted against the vast player resources of a senior club (Castlebar Mitchells). The panel present this evening comprised of the following: Cathal Cawley, Harry Sheridan, Adam Sheridan, Tom Smythe, Oisin Grimley, Ronan O’Donnell, Chris McGlynn, Mikey Hastings, Kian Moore, Robbie Staunton, Jason McGynn, Ian Murphy, Chris McNally, Cillian O’Grady, Sean Prenty, Ben Lennon, Daniel O’Malley, Jack Walsh, Rory Nolan & Liam Moore. Well done to the lads. Next up West Mayo Championship. Final Score: Kilmeena 1 - 6 2 - 14 Castlebar Mitchells
