- Some Crowd Shots from the County IFC McHale Park Sunday, October 19, 2025.
It may be interesting to observe and identify the number of spectators that witnessed the Kilmeena team capture another Intermediate Championship Trophy at McHale Park on Sunday, October 19th, paving the way for another crack at the senior championship in 2026. Hopefully, those same supporters, and more, will converge on Tuam Stadium on Sunday, November 9th, to cheer on the lads when they take on Caltra of Galway in the quarter final of AIB quarter final of the Connaught Intermediate Championship. - Christy Ferris - RIP
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Christy Ferris, Clogher, Fahy, Westport. Christy was an active and valued member of Kilmeena GAA from the early 1960s, playing his football with distinction right through to the early 1970s. He was part of the Kilmeena team that captured the Cusack Cup for the first time in 1968 with a memorable victory over Westport. Later that same year, the team progressed to the County Junior Final, where they faced a strong Ballaghaderreen side that included the late, great John Morley (RIP). Christy delivered one of his finest performances that day at centre half forward, scoring several points and a crucial goal at a pivotal stage in the game. In June 1970, Christy was a member of the Kilmeena team that toured America, creating memories that lasted a lifetime. Just a few weeks ago, he was delighted to reunite with his teammates at the book launch celebrating that memorable trip, held in The Buckfield Inn. Christy was renowned for his strong work ethic , his commitment to long hours in the construction industry was unmatched. He also spent several years working as a fitter in Westport Textiles, where he was highly regarded by colleagues. Away from football and work, Christy was a skilled card player and a regular at the Thursday night games in The Buckfield Inn, where he enjoyed the banter, good humour, and company of his many friends. Christy will be fondly remembered as a gentleman, a proud Kilmeena man, and a great friend to all who knew him. We extend our sympathy to his family on their great loss. - Senior Ladies – Junior A Relegation Play-off Kilmeena vs Westport B
Kilmeena: 3 - 19 Westport B: 3 – 10 (AET) Islandeady was the neutral venue on an October Saturday morning for this do-or-die contest between the ladies representing Kilmeena and their neighbours representing Westport’s B team. Geographical proximity inevitability equates to familiarity and friendships formed off the pitch – through work, school and socially!! But for 65 odd minutes and then a further 20 plus minutes (extra-time) all friendships and allegiances were parked in favour of a battle to decide who would survive to play Junior A football for 2026. Weather conditions were perfect for the 11am throw-in time – it was overcast but dry and calm. Captained by Eabha Carney, Kilmeena played towards the scoreboard end for the first half – there was no appreciable wind advantage either way today. Ciara Joyce registered Kilmeena’s first score, a goal for the ladies in black and white. After this, the teams swapped points, Westport B scoring sixminors to Kilmeena’s five, the Kilmeena points coming from the boots of Lisa Hastings, Amy Carney, Aoife Gannon and Ciara Joyce. And it was the latter with her second goal of the opening 30 minutes that gave Kilmeena a cushion of five points at half time. Half Time Score: Kilmeena, 2 – 05 Westport B, 0 – 06 The second half was only a few minutes old when Westport B,having made some half time positional changes, took Kilmeena for two rapid fire goals. A bit of shock-and-awereally. But with Kilmeena quickly able to counter theWestport B positional switches, this early second half wobblewas quickly resolved. Kilmeena went on to outscore Westport B by eight points to three from the 35th minute to the 55th minute, (scores from Ciara Joyce, sisters Eabha & Amy Carney and Lisa Hastings) giving the country ladies a four-point lead coming into the closing stages. But this is always a dangerous period and so it proved. With about 3 minutes remaining, Westport B got the goal they were looking for and suddenly there was only a single point separating the sides. Westport B pressurised the Kilmeena kick-outs and eventually following an attempted score, they won a 45. From this they managed to manufacture the levelling score and with that, the ref blew the full-timewhistle. Full Time Score (end of Normal Time): Kilmeena, 2 – 13 Westport B, 3 – 10 And so, it would take extra-time to separate these sides. Westport B were evidently buoyed by their late second half recovery to level the game in normal time. Kilmeena on the other hand could be forgiven for feeling sorry for themselves and it would have been easy for the ladies in black and white to throw-in-the-towel at this stage. With no score registered in the opening seven minutes of the first period of extra time it was looking like neither team could grasp the initiative. Then in the 8th minute of first half extra time, Sinead Hughes kicked the Kilmeena ladies into the lead with a well taken point. This was quickly followed by a goal from the boot of Ciara Joyce (a hat-trick for the full forward). This gave Kilmeena a four-point lead at the interval of extra time. And from there, the ladies in black and white didn’t look back. Although fatigue and cramp were beginning to set in, the Kilmeena ladies laid siege to the Westport B goals Points followed from Lisa Hastings, Eabha Carney, Ciara Joyce, Emma Murray and Katie Moran (Jnr.) putting any notion of a late comeback by Westport B out of reach. Although no prizes were given out to the victors today, this was the most important match this group will have played this season. In the end, the team in black and white stood up and were counted when it mattered most. The resilience shown by the Kilmeena ladies in Islandeady on Saturday morning 11thOctober 2025 will stand them well in their future encounters. Team: Ellie Mae Keane, Mags Ryder, Aine Gallagher, Laura O'Grady, Sheila Bohan, Aine Regan, Sinead Hughes, Laura Kelly, Eabha Carney, Lisa Hastings, Aoife Gannon, Siofra Hughes, Amy Carney, Ciara Joyce, Lucy O’Malley. - Underage girls celebrate their 2025 achievements on the playing field.
The U16 and U14 girls recently celebrated their footballing achievements in the Clubhouse after winning silverware in their respective age groups earlier this year. This gathering provided an opportunity for their managers to acknowledge and congratulate them on their fantastic performances throughout the year in their respective competitions. One encouraging aspect was how the U14 girls stepped up to support the U16 team due to a shortage of players in that age group. They blended seamlessly into the U16 squad, contributing to a significant victory over Kilmoremoy in the final, with a score of 7 - 08 to 4 - 04 in the U16 Division 5 League Cup. Not to be outdone, the U14 girls distinguished themselves by defeating McHale Rovers 7 - 07 to 5 - 01 to win the Division 4 League Shield on June 9th of this year. The future of ladies' football at the Club looks promising! - Senior Ladies - Championship Round 3
St Brigids vs Kilmeena St Brigids 9 – 07, Kilmeena 4 - 12 Kilmeena travelled to Kilfian on Sunday, 14th September to contest this third round of the Junior A Championship. Both teams lost their second-round encounters seven days earlier,so each needed to get something out of this contest – for St Brigid’s a win would likely see them through to the cup semi-final whilst a win for Kilmeena would ease relegation fears and offer a potential shield final spot. Scoring 4 – 12 will win a lot of games but not today! Scoring the same number of times as the opposition might also yield a share of the spoils but not when the opposition score nine goals and accumulate more green than white flags. Those are the quirks of this contest. For the third Sunday in a row, mother nature wasn’t in the mood for kindness – conditions were blustery and wet for the entire contest. Kilmeena had the aid of a stiff breeze for the opening 30 minutes. Playing 13-aside (at the behest of St Brigids) Kilmeena put in a good opening half. Three goals and fourpoints from the boot of Ciara Joyce and points from Lisa Hastings and Eabha Carney meant the visitors held a 3-pointlead at the small whistle. Half time score: St Brigids 3 – 03, Kilmeena 3 - 06 Kilmeena faced into a strong breeze for the second half but battled away throughout and were still well in contention, only trailing by four points with 8 minutes remaining. However, St Brigids utilised the long ball at times to great effect and in so doing they scored a total of six goals in the second half, albeit one of those was awarded by the referee after he had (seconds earlier) blown for a free! Kilmeena did score a goal and six points in the second half, but this was never enough to offset the blitz of second half goals by St Brigids. This was most definitely a contest where goals win games. The final result leaves the Kilmeena ladies facing Westport B in a few weeks time, with the winner of that contest retaining Junior A status for 2026. Team; Aoife Gannon, Sheila Bohan, Laura O'Grady, Mags Ryder, Aine Gallagher, Sinead Hughes, Laura Kelly, Eabha Carney, Amy Carney, Lisa Hastings, Siofra Hughes, Ciara Joyce, Emma Murray. Subs: Leah Walsh for Emma Murray, Emma Murray (reintroduced) for Amy Carney (injury), Amy Carney later reintroduced for Leah Walsh, Katie Moran (Jnr) for Emma Murray, Katie Moran (Snr) for Mags Ryder, Eva Mulchronefor Siofra Hughes, Lucy O’Malley for Sheila Bohan, Rachel Gibbons, Ellie Mai Keane, Emma Jane Gill, Julie O’Grady.
- U10 girls sponsored gear
Great to see the Kilmeena U10 girls been recently presented with a new set of GAA Tops, shorts and socks which was partly sponsored by Arramara Teoranta. The girls are delighted with the new kits. Making the presentation on behalf of Arramara Teoranta was Jim Ryder (far left). We are so grateful for their continued support in helping our club and strengthening our community presence.
