- Kilmeena GAA Dinner Dance 2020
View the photos from the evening here. On Saturday February 15th, Kilmeena GAA Club celebrated its 6th annual Valentines Dinner Dance with club members and the wider community. As always, the event was an opportunity for all club members and the community to socialise and celebrate the successes our club has achieved over the years. The development of our club rests on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Chairman John McDonald highlighted on the night that the Club needs to be organised in terms of coaching, administration, funding, communication, facilities and development. The Club aims to inspire the youth, to support our players and members, and to build friendships within the community. The success of our Dinner Dance reflects the commitment of our volunteers and the progress our club has boasted in recent years. As always, the Kilmeena Dinner Dance acts as an awards evening for the 2019 year. Michael Ryan was proudly presented with the honour of Club Person of the Year. This award was kindly sponsored by Midwest Furniture and presented to Michael by Teresa Smyth. Michael was acknowledged for his loyal dedication to the club which is recognised by his involvement in management and coaching over the years, and his current service as kit man for the men's senior team. Michael continues to support our players and club and is a deserved winner of this year's award. Our Community Person of the Year award was presented to Caragh Ryan by guest speaker, Minister for Rural & Community Development, Michael Ring TD. Caragh was acknowledged for her dedication and fundraising efforts in aid of Western Alzheimer’s. At the end of last year, Caragh was also a recipient of the Mayo People of the Year award. - Kilmeena V Castlebar West Mayo Minor A C/Ship Round 1 2020-07-24
Kilmeena 0 - 3 9 - 17 Castlebar Mitchells This was Kilmeena Minor’s first competitive fixture of 2020. Having been grouped in with the senior clubs of Castlebar, Westport, Ballintubber and Breaffy, any game in this division would never be ‘a walk in the park’. Pairc Josie Munnelly (the venue for this game) on a damp dreary grey July evening will not conjure up many (if any) fond on-field memories for the Kilmeena Minors or their mentors or indeed the few hardy Kilmeena supporters that travelled to the Mitchells venue, when they look back on this game. Kilmeena were simply outclassed by a fitter, stronger and collectively more skilful opponent this evening and the final scoreline merely reflects that. Whilst the Kilmeena lads gave everything they had; it was no match for the Mitchells this evening. There were some good individual performances on-field for Kilmeena, but many will know that they could and can do better. This group will bounce back. The only way is up! The panel present this evening comprised of the following: Darragh Slattery, Harry Sheridan, Adam Sheridan, Tom Smythe, Oisin Grimley, Ronan O’Donnell, Chris McGlynn, Mikey Hastings, Kian Moore, Ian Murphy, Cillian O’Grady, Mark Hastings, Robbie Staunton, Chris McNally, Jason McGlynn, Ciaran Kilcoyne, Daniel O’Malley, Rory Nolan & Liam Moore. - Mucky start to the season for our U12s!
Even though it was four months late, it was almost worth waiting for, as Kilmeena U12s finally got to play their first game of the season - a challenge match away to Westport. At times the football matched the mucky conditions but it was a relief just to be playing a game of football. The first quarter was quiet with minimal scoring and in the second, Westport started the brighter, registering a couple of goals and several points to just a few scores from Kilmeena. Westport pulled further ahead in the third quarter but in the fourth, Kilmeena finally settled and started banging in goals and managed a few points too. Westport won by ten points in the end but had the game lasted another ten minutes, who knows what could’ve happened! There were some heroic performances today in atrocious conditions with some classy defending in particular. Back row, left to right: Alan Mortimer, Tiernan Ahern, Tom Cox, Sean Keane, Tadhg Daly, Robbie Murphy, Jamie Durkan. Front row, left to right: Kyle Mulchrone, Cian Moran, Shane Durkan, Kevin Hastings, Cormac Slattery, Felix Zeray, Eoghan Cannon. All in all, it was an encouraging start to the season. Plenty of work needs to be done but there’s no doubt that this team has the skill, desire and heart to make for a very interesting season indeed. Well done boys - your coaches and parents are proud of you all!

- Community Stunned by the Sudden Passing of Mick O'Brien
The parish of Kilmeena and surrounding communities were stunned by the news of the unexpected and untimely death of one of its residents Mick O’Brien on Thursday evening, June 4th. Mick was held in high esteem in the local community and by his many colleagues throughout the country. Both his and Rita’s work colleagues and his son Cian’s teammates from Fahy Rovers AFC along with members of the wider community and family friends formed a guard of honour as his funeral cortege left his home on Monday morning on its journey to St Brendan’s Church, Myna. Fr Charlie McDonnell celebrated the service, which was relayed to members of the local community and close friends who gathered outside in quiet social solidarity while at the same time observing NPHET recommendations. Following the service his remains were laid to rest in Aughagower cemetery. A Dublin native, and boy did he often remind us! Particularly during the many championship battles of late between Mayo and his native county Dublin. We felt that he privately held a wish that Mayo could have taken at least one title so that the friendly banter might continue. Sharp-witted and with a sense of Dublin humour, he was well capable of holding his own in any situation. Mick’s passing is deeply regretted by his wife Rita and son Cian, father Leo, brother Lee, sisters Anna Marie and Joanne , extended family, in-laws, neighbours, work colleagues and many friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
