Match Report Michael Moore Kilmeena V Tourmakeady Minor League The Kilmeena minor ladies played Tourmakeady in the first round of the 2018 league at home in wet and windy conditions on Wednesday evening. They got off to a great start and gaols by Lilly Brady, Katie Hogan and Sarah Harper put Kilmeena ahead after 15 minutes. Tourmakeady were denied goals chances on a number of occasions by excellent defending and saves by Susannah Horgan. The visitors continued to press and kicked some great points in the first half. The sides were level 3-2 to 1-8 at halftime. The second half was played at a fast pace with Tourmakeady dominating possession. However points by Shannon Burke and Katie Hogan kept Kilmeena in touch. With 10 minutes remaining the sides were level but it was the visitors who finished strongest. It was a tough game for the minor ladies and the experience will stand to them in the future. - Kilmeena V Davitts Ladies Junior League 15/04/18
Match report by David O'Malley. Kilmeena Ladies Junior team kicked off their 2018 season with a trip to Davitts of Ballindine on Sunday afternoon last. This year Kilmeena will compete in Division 3 of the ladies’ senior league. The first half was an intense and bruising affair as both teams tried to take control of the game. Playing against a very stiff breeze Kilmeena battled bravely to keep in touch with a fit and physical Davitts side. The half time whistle was welcomed by both sides as the game was played in very humid conditions. Davitts to their credit held a commanding lead at the half time interval. Kilmeena started the second half brightly with some stylish attacking play. Kilmeena to their credit picked off some nice scores during the second period. Some brave defending led to a series of expansive counter attacking play that any senior ladies team would be proud of. The whole team dug deep but unfortunately it wasn’t to be their day. The mental strength of this Kilmeena team is to be admired as they never gave up and fought to the bitter end. It was a historical day for many of the ladies as they were making their debut for the Parish. Considering the result, this group will improve and prosper as the season goes on. It’s early days in the formation of this team but signs are positive for a bright future. Click HERE for more match images
- U16 Boys Gaelic Football League – Division 2, Round 4 Kilmeena vs Moy Davitts
Kilmeena were back on home turf for this 4th round game against ‘table toppers’ Bohola Moy Davitts. Weatherwise, conditions were ideal for football – cloudy but dry with a light breeze. The visitors got off to the perfect start, catching the Kilmeena rearguard out of position and scoring a goal inside the opening minute. From the resulting kick-out, Kilmeena were again under pressure and with the referees whistle not sounding in favour of the men in black and white during the early exchanges, Kilmeena just couldn’t mount a sustained attack into the Moy Davitts danger zone. Ultimately, the visitors were awarded a free-in; which they duly converted (for a point). 1 – 1 to no score in favour of the visitors with 5 minutes of play having elapsed. Following some positional tweaking from the sideline, the Kilmeena lads slowly but surely began to find their rhythm and a fantastic point from Ian Murphy opened Kilmeena’s account. From here until half time the home side played with greater intensity and aided by a half back line that provided a solid first line of defence the men in black and white launched a number of counter attacks. Following some great team play, Kian Moore finished the ball to the Moy Davitts net. This was followed shortly afterwards by another Kilmeena goal from the trusty boot of Chris McNally. In between both sides exchanged points, to give a half time scoreline of 2 – 3 to 1 – 5, in favour of the home team. The scene was set for a tight second half – anyone’s game then......!! And so it was............... Kilmeena players, numbers 2 to 7 (aided randomly by other home-side players) put in a masterful display of defending, which limited the Moy Davitts team to a goal and two points for the entire second half. In fairness the visitors didn’t make it easy either for the home side, with Kilmeena’s only scores entering the final 10 minutes of play being a goal each from Ian Murphy and Kian Moore - it was a 2 point game now. That was until Ronan O’Donnell (who put in a man-of-the-match performance), won possession around the middle of the pitch and set off on a solo-run towards the Moy Davitts goal, then delivered a perfectly timed pass to Chris McNally, who finished to the net. Kilmeena pressurised the Moy Davitts re-starts and through a combination of frees and open play, added a further 3 points to their tally. A strong finish and deserved 8 point winning margin for the Kilmeena lads at the final whistle. Kilmeena are away to Mayo Gaels on Tuesday 17th April, 2018 The panel present this evening comprised of the following: Cathal Cawley, Ben Lennon, Adam Sheridan, Tom Smythe, Cillian O’Grady, Ronan O’Donnell, Robbie Staunton, Chris McGlynn, Mikey Hastings, Mark Hastings, Jason McGlynn, Ian Murphy, Sean Prenty, Chris McNally, Kian Moore, Daniel O’Malley, Jack Walsh, Rory Nolan, Connor Sammon, Harry Sheridan, Liam Moore. - Kilmeena V Hollymount-Carramore U18 Boys League Division 3B 13th April '18
Kilmeena hosted Hollymount-Carramore in the third round of the Minor League on a perfect evening for football in St Brendan’s Park. After a sub-standard performance in their previous game against Kiltimagh, the men from Kilmeena returned to winning ways with a much improved performance. Kilmeena dominated possession in the early exchanges but failed to convert their chances. The home side were very patient and slick in their build-up play and opened up the Hollymount-Carramore defence on several occasions in the opening 30 minutes, resulting in both Paul Hoban and Cian Moore being denied by the goal-keeper. A succession of frees from John McGlynn and Sean Moore, respectively, in addition to a fisted effort from Cian Moore, ensured Kilmeena were leading by 6 points to 4 at half-time. The second-half took on a similar pattern to the first, with Kilmeena again dominating possession but failing to add to the scoreboard. Hollymount-Carramore proved dangerous on counter-attacks and were denied on a number of occasions by the excellent defending of Josh Mulchrone and Niall Mullin. Kilmeena continued to work hard and probe the Hollymount-Carramore defence. In the 42nd minute the Kilmeena barren-spell ended when Jack Carney rose to claim the Hollymount-Carramore kickout and following some great build-up play Ronan O’Donnell finished the move to the net. Further points from Jack Carney and John McGlynn extended the home team’s lead. The game was over as a contest in the 53rd minute when Cian Moore rose highest to fist a Jack Carney free to the net. Kilmeena were worthy winners on a score line of 2-10 to 7 points. This was a much improved performance from the Kiltimagh game, with Kilmeena’s overall work-rate and defensive play being of a far higher standard. Match Report by Declan Ryan and Niall Ryan. - Kilmeena V Parke U16 Girls League 2018-04-11
The U-16 girls had their first game on the season on Wednesday 11th April against a very tough Parke side. Parke started very dominant and had established a substantial lead by half time. Kilmeena re-grouped at half time and came out with a renewed vigour and put in a strong performance with some great play and some good scores. Ultimately the lead that Parke established in the first half was too much for Kilmeena to overturn and Parke ran out comfortable victors. A big thanks to the U-14 girls who stepped in to bolster our numbers. Match report; Peter Mortimer Click HERE for more match images
