  • Kilmeena GAA and Kilmeena LGFA: working to be a “Healthy Club”

Kilmeena GAA and Kilmeena LGFA are currently working towards being awarded a “Healthy Club” status. Specifically, the Healthy Club Project is a GAA initiative aimed at encouraging clubs to contribute to the health and wellbeing of their members, and members of the wider community. To be successful in our quest we will be looking to implement a plan of action that offers our community a variety of opportunities to enhance our physical, social and emotional health. Already we are off to a great start with a number of initiatives either completed or underway. These include; - Mayo Day 10k your way - Irish Life Steps Challenge - Ladies exercise classes However, there’s so much more we can do to keep up the momentum and make sure that all members of the community can benefit. We would love to hear your ideas and suggestions, and will circulate a questionnaire amongst members in due course. Please take the time to complete it. A small group has been organised to get the project up and running, but it’s going to be a community effort to push us over the line to achieve “Healthy Club” status. So with this in mind let’s keep the club where it belongs - at the heart of our community 🖤🤍 #HealthyClub #20x20.ie

  • A (d)rainy Day in Kilmeena!

As I’m sure the people of Clifden would confirm, the weather during this week was exceptionally bad with very intense rainfall on Tuesday night & Wednesday morning. According to Met Eireann the rainfall accumulation between 00:30 and 8:30 at Newport Weather Station was over 35mm (Nearly an Inch and a half!). If our main pitch was currently in use, we would have expected a lot of water logging and that it would have been unplayable for a few days and been subject to cutting up when action resumed. Over the coming weeks we plan to complete the pitch works and believe the benefits of these works will prove worthwhile for many years to come. There has been extensive drainage works installed under the pitch. While the final works are not completed, the benefits from a drainage viewpoint can clearly be seen in the two pictures below. The first taken at 8:39am Wednesday morning, shows vast waterlogging, while the second picture taken less than four hours later shows no remaining surface water. • Major Pitch Development Fundraiser

Dear club members, former members and friends of the club, The last number of years have seen our club develop and expand to a facility we can be rightly proud of. We have seen the addition of a new Juvenile playing pitch, all-weather sand training pitch, kicking wall, a gym for all members, two new dressing rooms and extra car parking spaces. The next step in the continued development and improvement of our facilities is the work currently being undertaken on our main pitch. While our pitch has long been considered a good pitch there have been a number of occasions over recent years where training and games have had to be cancelled or home advantage conceded due to an unplayable pitch surface, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall. The works which form part of the club’s three-year plan, consist of levelling, drainage and reseeding the pitch. The work is being done to the same high standard as many inter-county pitches around the country. The benefits of these developments will last a lifetime. In total, nearly 13km of drains will be laid under the pitch. As well as an improved playing surface, the main benefit of the works will be to significantly increase the availability of the pitch during poor weather especially at the start and end of the season. Some adjoining fencing will also be installed along the roadway between the main pitch (behind the goal) and the new juvenile pitch. It is my strong belief that we all have a part to play in the development of our club and its facilities. Our target for this fundraising initiative is €70,000 and I am asking you, if possible, to play your part and support Kilmeena GAA Club with our pitch development fundraiser, “Ball on the Wall”. The fundraiser allows for the name of an individual, family or loved one to be inscribed on a granite ball to be permanently displayed on the wall of the stand. To support the fundraiser, please note the following points: · A standing order for €5 per week needs to be left in place for two years and must reference the sender’s name when being setup so that they can be identified by the club. Banks details are as follows: Kilmeena GAA Club, Ulster Bank. BIC: ULSB IE 2D IBAN: IE34 ULSB 9864 3040 3050 88 · Alternate payment options are available - please contact any member of the finance committee. · If you have online banking, it is normally a simple process to setup a standing order without the need to visit the bank. · Company or corporate donations would also be greatly accepted as part of this fundraising drive. · If you are not contacted but would like to donate, then please contact a member of the finance committee. · If you have family members or friends with links to the club that are living outside the parish or abroad, then please let them know of this initiative. If you have any questions in relation to the fundraising, please speak with me or contact any member of the finance committee to discuss. • U12s do the business in Louisburgh - just!

With our panel wracked by injuries and holidays, we only had 13 players to call on for our latest challenge match, away to Louisburgh. The wet and blustery conditions didn’t make for pretty football but our boys did the basics well, tackling heroically to ensure a two-point win at the final whistle. The game was nip and tuck for the first three quarters and was level going into the final quarter. Two quick goals and two points gave us what we thought was a comfortable lead with only minutes remaining but Louisburgh hit back with two goals of their own and spurned a great chance to win the game with the final kick of the game. It was a fantastic effort by each and every one of our lads. Louisburgh had the luxury of seven substitutes but our boys had to play through it all, sustaining injuries to four players who dusted themselves down and returned to the action, and still miraculously held on for the win. With the commencement of the league growing ever closer, this was the best possible preparation for this team and gave their - and their coaches' - confidence a great boost. Well done boys. Back row, left to right: Jamie Durkan, Kyle Mulchrone, Alan Gannon, Adam Moran, Robbie Murphy, Sean Keane, Tiernan Aherne, Sean Kilcoyne. Front row, left to right: Tom Cox, Felix Zeray, Cian Moran, Jason Feehan, Cormac Slattery.
