- Dermot Flanagan Pays a Visit to Kilmeena GAA Club 2021-08-21
Former Mayo stalwart, Dermot Flanagan, arrived at St Brendan's Park Kilmeena this Saturday morning as part of his fundraising initiative for the oncology unit in Mayo University Hospital. A condition without parameters, Dermot was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2018, a form of blood cancer. He is now in full remission following treatment, in which the oncology unit at MUH played a considerable part in his recovery. This initiative started eight days ago; Dermot's goal was to visit every GAA club in the county as part of his drive to raise funds for the unit in Castlebar. This morning saw him on the final day of his campaign. With his son Patrick, Pat Mulchrone prepares for the arrival of Dermot and his entourage while also declaring his bold enthusiasm for the upcoming All-Ireland final. - Fr. Jim Walsh and Fr. Charlie McDonnell Bless New Pitch.
A sincere thank you to Fr. Jim Walsh & to Fr. Charlie McDonnell, who joined us this morning (Saturday) to bless the newly laid pitch at St. Brendan's Park. After the blessing, the Club presented both men with the 'Community Person of the Year' award in recognition of everything they do for our community and parish. This was especially evident over recent times when despite the challenges of Covid-19, they continued to provide the sacraments, support young and old alike and keep our spirits lifted, for which we are very grateful. - U13s save their best until last
Kilmeena 5-15 2-6 Burrishoole Our under 13s put in a season's-best performance with a comprehensive win over Burrishoole in Kilmeena this evening. We dominated in every position and quarter. Our defence and midfield were solid and our big front men caused consternation at the other end. The work-rate was fantastic and the overall performance indicated how much this team has improved from the first game of the season. We ended up winning a very respectable three of our seven games, including the last two on the trot. The boys should be incredibly proud of themselves. It's truly amazing what can be achieved with application and team spirit. Well done lads - your coaches couldn't be happier with you!

- Fantastic win - just - for U13s
Kilmeena 6-7 - 4-12 Kiltimagh In a thriller of a game, Kilmeena U13s secured both points for the second time this season with a one-point win over Kiltimagh on a sunny evening in Kilmeena. Playing with the wind, our boys started brightly netting four goals and kicking four points in the first half. It was nip-and-tuck in the third quarter but in the final quarter our backs were to the wall. Finding it difficult to get get the ball out of defence, Kiltimagh took full advantage, raining shots down on our goal, eating away at our lead. With only thirty seconds to go and four points behind, Kiltimagh were awarded a free which resulted in a goal, leaving us with only a one point advantage. Thankfully we won our kick out and retained possession for the final few seconds and won the game. It was fantastic for the boys to win a game given the recent results but this was no fluke: their application and tenacity this evening was the best we've seen from them this season and we know they have more to give. Only one league game left - a home fixture against Burrishoole next Thursday, 22nd July. Fingers crossed they can keep the momentum going. Well done boys!
- Kilmeena GAA Launch the Social Rounders Club 2021-07-11
This weekend saw the start of something new in Kilmeena GAA as we got our Social Rounders off to a flying start. Most people would know Rounders as a fun bat and ball game we played at school. But, it's actually a long-standing GAA sport, and, as we found out this weekend, it's about more than just whacking the ball and hoping for the best!! The Rounders Development Officer, Elaine Sheehy, travelled up from Cork to take us through our paces and bring us up to speed with all the tactics and skills that we will need to get our teams up and running. After a few expressions of interest over the summer, Club Chairman, John McDonald, was very keen to get this off the ground. In true Kilmeena style, it wasn't long before we had a willing gang of Club members happy to get involved. Club Officers Julie Moore and Eimear O'Connell got to work, and it was fantastic to bring everyone together on a Sunny Sunday to get things started. The aim was for this event to be a social gathering bringing club members together under a slightly different banner. Judging by the banter and laughter on Sunday, we definitely achieved this. Sessions will be weekly, and having fun remains our top priority, but participating in a Junior Blitz in September is now on everyone's radar. We have a lot to learn, but bring it on. Who knows where this could lead us! Julie Moore. - U13s feel the heat in Tourmakeady
Google Maps tells us that it takes 38 minutes to drive from Kilmeena to Tourmakeady. The reverse journey felt a lot longer after a punishing Thursday evening there in 20 degree heat. In footballing terms, the difference felt the same as top-of-the-table Tourmakeady ran riot with their athleticism and skill - they were simply too hot to handle. We actually played reasonably well in the first and second quarters but come the third, our heads dropped and the floodgates opened. As we approach our final two games (mercifully, at home, first against Kiltimagh this coming Thursday and then the following Thursday against Burrishoole) we'll need to retain and build upon the positive attitude we showed during our first half performance and who knows what might happen? Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all. Emily Dickinson Thanks to Ollie Mulchone for the photos.
