  • Kilmeena V Kilmoremoy U16 Ladies League Final Div 5 2025-07-06

Kilmeena U16 Ladies Crowned Cup Champions: Kilmeena U16 Ladies Crowned Cup Champions: On a fresh Sunday morning, the Kilmeena U16 ladies togged out on Bekan Pitch #4 for the County Final clash against Kilmoremoy in the D5 Cup Final. For some of these young women, it was their second county final outing in just four weeks — and the big question remained whether they could bring another piece of silverware back to the shores of Clew Bay over the next 60 minutes. As the whistle blew and proceedings began, Kilmeena faced into a substantial wind for the first half. Though it may not have seemed too evident from the sideline, its impact was keenly felt in the centre of the field. In the opening minutes, both defences were tested, but as the half wore on, Kilmoremoy made their intentions clear, finding the net three times and putting Kilmeena on the back foot. With a mountain to climb, Kilmeena responded with grit and determination. By putting serious pressure on the Kilmoremoy kick outs, we enjoyed a purple patch toward the end of the first half, rattling in three goals of our own in quick succession. These came through a combination of sharp midfield play and slick forward movement. Kilmoremoy added a late point before the break, giving them a narrow lead at halftime: 4-04 to 4-03. At the interval, there were some tough words spoken. We knew the first-half performance was not a reflection of who we are. Leaders were called for — and, as always, the girls rallied together with spirit, determination, and unwavering support for one another as they prepared to face the second half. Now, with the wind at our backs, Kilmeena came out firing. Driving forward again and again, the girls put on a commanding second-half display, racking up an impressive 3-05 in addition to a coolly taken penalty by our captain. Kilmoremoy attempted to mount a response, but our resilient and steadfast backs stood firm, shutting down every attack and holding the opposition scoreless for the entire half. The final whistle blew with the scoreboard reading 7-08 to 4-04 — a tremendous victory and another well-earned county title. This achievement was made all the more remarkable considering the strength of the opposition, with ten of our starting team still U14 and playing up two years. The future is bright for this talented and courageous group of players. Match Report: Mairéad Durkan more...

  • Kilmeena G.A.A. team's 1970 tour of the U.S.A. 2025-06-27

The Buckfield Inn hosted a memorable night of reminiscence and nostalgia as Martin McIntyre officially launched his compilation of photographs and local newspaper excerpts, documenting the Kilmeena G.A.A. team's 1970 tour of the U.S.A.  Martin also set up a carousel of slides from the 1970 tour and expertly guided us through the photographs with detailed commentary. The large attendance that evening reflected the interest and respect for the significant achievement of the 1968 team, which formed the core of the travelling group. The presence of former 1968 players, family members of deceased players, and current club members and officials demonstrated that the success of the 1968 team is considered a pivotal moment in the club's history. This publication originated from a conversation between Martin and the late Michael Feehan's daughter, Deirdre, who had asked Martin about obtaining some photographs from the U.S.A. tour. Regrettably, Martin was slow to respond to her request, and then he received the heartbreaking news of Michael's passing. Motivated by a sense of duty to rectify his oversight, Martin set out to create this publication. It showcases extensive research, meticulous scrutiny of microfilm newspaper coverage, and digital photo restoration, resulting in a professional and chronological account of the 1970 U.S.A. tour. The narrative follows the sequence of photographs, highlighting the precision evident on every page. Martin dedicated the first copy of "Kilmeena Team on Tour in the USA" to the memory of his close friend and football teammate, the late Michael Feehan. With pride, members of the Feehan family watched as Martin presented the book to Michael's daughter, Deirdre, and his niece, Melina, who had travelled from London for the occasion. This publication and its presentation mark a significant milestone in the history of Kilmeena G.A.A. The 1968 team placed Kilmeena among the West Mayo Championship winners and served as a catalyst for future teams striving for success. Martin has created a book for posterity that captures the events and influences of that era. It reflects the loyalty and strong bonds among the team, illustrating the warmth, hospitality, and heartfelt joy of the Kilmeena/Mayo diaspora in the various states the team visited. Martin can take great pride in this book, which was compiled with a heartfelt connection to his past and present teammates, manager, and officials who undertook that incredible journey together. It will always inspire Kilmeena G.A.A. Club to reflect on its achievements, appreciate its unique heritage in a small rural area, and instil confidence in the next generation to forge a brighter future for the club. A sincere note of gratitude to Ms. Rachel Keane, who deserves commendation for her skilled photography in capturing all attendees and the various aspects of the night. Sincere appreciation also to Paul Fitzgerald and his parents, Paul and Carmel, for their hospitality and professionalism. They truly embraced the significance of the book launch and ensured that everyone enjoyed the occasion. Claire Ryan more...

  • Kilmeena V Kiltimagh Senior Ladies Adult RD2 2025-06-29

Kilmeena 2 – 10, Kiltimagh 4 - 09 Kilmeena hosted Kiltimagh on Sunday 29th June for Round Two of the Adult League. In near perfect weather conditions, there was little to separate these sides on the scoreboard at the end of the first 30 minutes of football. Kilmeena won the lion’s share of possession from both their own and the opposition’s restarts and in truth the home side ought to have carried a bigger lead into the break. That said, a very competitive and entertaining first half of football left the contest finely balanced for the 2nd half – it was either sides to win or lose. Kilmeena’s Lisa Hastings scored the only goal of the 1st half to leave it, Kilmeena 1 - 05, Kiltimagh 0 – 7 at the short whistle. Kiltimagh seized the initiative right from the 2nd half throw-in – they gathered possession, ran at the Kilmeena defence and in the blink-of-an-eye, the ball was in the Kilmeena net. Kilmeena were rattled, Kiltimagh were emboldened. Kiltimagh pushed up on the Kilmeena restarts and it paid dividends – the visitors scored another 1 – 01. But, the Kilmeena ladies steadied themselves and pulled a couple of points back. Kiltimagh were not done yet and they plundered another goal. Then Kilmeena were awarded a penalty and this was perfectly dispatched by Sinead Hughes. The home side added another point to narrow the gap to 3 points. However, the visitors had the last say, scoring their 4th goal of the 2nd half. Goals win games and Kiltimagh proved that today! Whilst this was a disappointing result for the Kilmeena ladies, there are learnings and lots of positives to take from this contest too. Our U14 girls hosted neighbours Westport in their third championship outing and treated supporters to a fantastic evening of football. The match began as a tightly contested affair, with both sides showcasing skillful, challenge-free flowing football. As the game progressed into the second quarter, Kilmeena began to find their rhythm. Thanks to some superb passing and sharp scoring, our girls started to edge ahead and take control of the game. The final stages saw Kilmeena push on with determination, ultimately securing a well-deserved win. • Kilmeena Tour the USA in June 1970

In June 1970, the Kilmeena GAA team embarked on an exciting tour of the USA, visiting seven cities and playing six football matches. This incredible journey created unforgettable memories and experiences along the way. Martin McIntyre, a member of that renowned touring team, has meticulously documented this remarkable adventure in a captivating book. The official launch of this publication will be held at the Buckfield Inn on this coming Friday evening, the 27th of June, at 8:30 pm. As we gather for this special occasion, we will take a moment to honour the cherished members of the team who have sadly passed away in the intervening years. We will fondly remember their spirit and contributions to the Club during that era. We warmly invite all surviving touring party members to join us for an evening of reminiscing and storytelling about this legendary event alongside the relatives and friends of those who are no longer with us. This celebration promises to be a heartfelt gathering, and we encourage all club members to come together for this remembrance and tribute to past events.
