- West Mayo U18B Final (vs Parke) !
The meeting of these two sides took place at Breaffy GAA grounds, in Ballyheane, with throw-in at 5.15pm. Conditions were perfect for the contest – the pitch had benefited from 6 days without rain and the weather on this autumn evening was overcast but dry and flat calm. Once the game got underway, the flat calm of the weather wasn’t exactly replicated along the sidelines!! There wasn’t much to separate the sides in the opening quarter. Kilmeena were guilty of gifting the ball to Parke on too many occasions. However, Darragh Slattery got Kilmeena on the scoreboard with a converted mark. This was followed by a point from play off the boot of Cillian O’Grady. Parke chalked up 3 points in this opening period – 2 converted frees and a point from play. Parke were more enterprising with their point scoring after the water-break with points from frees (2), a converted mark and one from play. Whilst Kilmeena were still mixing the good with the not-so-good in attack, the defensive unit with full back Harry Sheridan and centre back Oisin Grimley were making sure Parke had to work extremely hard for their scores. Then, in one of the plays of the game, Chris McGlynn obtained possession and set off on one of his trademark runs through the centre third, before kicking (the ball) to the inside forward (Cillian O’Grady). A quick transfer from Cillian to the incoming Jack Mulchrone and the industrious man from Rassakeeran made no mistake – the ball was in the back of the Parke net. Liam Moore added a well taken free to give the men in black and white a tally of 1-1 for the second quarter. So at the small whistle, only the minimum separated the teams; with Parke edging it by 7 points to Kilmeena’s 1-3. Parke took the initiative in the early stages of the second half and broke through the Kilmeena defence to score a well taken goal and then followed this up with a point. 6 minutes into the second half then and Kilmeena found themselves 5 points adrift. Fresh legs were introduced off the bench – Cormac Lyons for Jack Walsh, Conal Gill for Brain Durkan and Sean Prenty for Dan O’Malley. Kilmeena began to turn the game around and in a blistering 10 minute spell, 5 points from the boot of Darragh Slattery – 3 frees and 2 from play – levelled the contest at the 2nd water-break. Needless to say the Kilmeena management would have been happy to forego the water-break at this stage, such was the momentum that the men in black and white had. The final quarter was tight and tense with no one willing to give an inch. Kilmeena added 2 more points from play – Darragh Slattery and Chris McGlynn obliging. Parke matched Kilmeena’s brace with a point from a free and one from play. With daylight fading, the prospect of extra time was attractive to nobody and something would have to give. Since his introduction in the 3rd quarter, substitute Conal Gill was causing all sorts of trouble for the Parke defence, with his movement and more direct style of running. And, in the closing stages when he took possession on the left wing and made towards goal, it looked like Parke had just done enough to prevent any serious damage (perhaps they would have settled for conceding a point at this juncture) and indeed Gill could have fisted over to give Kilmeena a one point lead. However, sensing a greater opportunity, Gill gave the perfect pass across to Cillian O’Grady – goal for Kilmeena and game over.......... Or was it.....one last attack by Parke but the Kilmeena defence - who were impressive throughout and were ably assisted by Ciaran Kilcoyne’s sweeping role - repelled this late effort and the final whistle sounded. The young men in Black and White celebrated wildly – and deservedly so. This was a tight contest right to the end and the win by Kilmeena was achieved by a complete team effort of 1 to 15, strengthened by substitutions and supported throughout by a strong bench. These lads all deserve great credit for coming from 5 points down early in the second half to win by 3 at the final whistle. Captain Daniel O’Malley accepted the Cup and elected for a shortened speech given the rapidly fading daylight!! Final score: Kilmeena; 2 – 10, Parke; 1 - 10 Well done lads. The panel present this evening comprised of the following: Evan O’Donnell, Jack Walsh, Harry Sheridan, Rian Kilcoyne, Ben Lennon, Oisin Grimley, Chris McGlynn, Liam Moore, Colin Hastings, Jack Mulchrone, Darragh Slattery, Brian Durkan, Daniel O’Malley (Capt.), Cillian O’Grady, Ciaran Kilcoyne, Cormac Lyons, Conor Feehan, Sean Prenty, Finley Gibbons, Adam O’Grady, Sean Gallagher, Conal Gill, Josh Browne, Conor Kelly, Cormac Feehan.

- Kilmeena U12s chalk up another fantastic win
Kilmeena 2-6 : 0-10 Tuar Mhic Éadaigh It wasn’t a day for pretty football but Kilmeena knew what they had to do to win their second of four games in the West Mayo U12 Championship against a talented U12 Tourmakeady side. Goals win games, as they say, and indeed that’s how it turned out in the end, as Kilmeena’s goals proved the difference, winning by two points. From the start Kilmeena’s defence smothered the Tourmakeady attack, and nicked a few scores of their own with some great counter-attacking football. By the last quarter a blanket defence strategy was employed as Tourmakeady threw everything they had in trying to overhaul the deficit. They scored several fine points but couldn’t manage a goal thanks to heroic, last-ditch defending and some incredible saves. Both teams were exhausted at the final whistle but it was the Kilmeena lads who deservedly took the points. Everyone who was present witnessed a fine display of never-say-die football from a talented bunch of players who now top the table. Their coaches are incredibly proud of them and who knows what this bunch can achieve. Next up is a rescheduled away fixture to Louisburgh tomorrow (Monday) evening. Hopefully the momentum will continue! Special thanks to Ollie Mulchrone for the brilliant photos. You can see more of Ollie's photos of the game here.

- Kilmeena V Kiltane Junior Ladies Frank Kelly Memorial Cup Final 2021-09-10
Having reached their first final since their formation, Kilmeena ladies lost out to the more experienced Kiltane side in an epic Frank Kelly Memorial Cup final in McGovern Park Burrishoole on Friday evening last. Leading by a point up to the final minute of full time, Kilmeena relinquished their lead following sustained attacks on goal by the Kiltane ladies to take the game to extra time. However, Kilmeena could not register a score in the added period, allowing Kiltane to emerge as the eventual winners following a most exciting and skilful game that the large attendance at the match enjoyed. This was only the second loss recorded by the Kilmeena girls throughout the entire league campaign; as it turned out, it was also against Kiltane in the first round. However, the experience gained from this round of league games will stand them in good stead in the upcoming championship. Well done, ladies - a massive accomplishment in your first year! - Féile na nÓg 2021
Report: Sean Barrett This year the Féile na nÓg competition moved away from the original age group of U14 to U15 to coincide with the change to uneven age groups. After a mediocre championship campaign, attention turned to the Feile for Kilmeena U15s. We were paired in Group 1 of the C competition alongside Achill, Westport and Ballintubber with the games taking place in Westport on Saturday morning last. Game one was against Achill where chances ebbed and flowed for both teams and could have gone either way. The lads battled hard throughout to earn a 2-5 a piece draw with the islanders. It was a game where it felt a point lost was also a point gained. It was a case of rest up quick and get ready for the next challenge. Game two saw us pitted against a fancied Ballintubber side who got out of the traps early and got some early scores to pull away. Kilmeena did enough to keep themselves in with a chance by tapping points over the bar. They found themselves at the break five points down in Spanish-like temperatures and losing corner back Rory Kilcoyne to a shoulder injury was a blow. They knew there was a big task ahead if they were going stay in this competition! They started well in the second half and worked very hard for one another. A penalty from captain John Murphy brought us back into the game and scores from Declan Moore, Luke Durkan, Micheal Regan, Aaron Bourke and Murphy again did enough to get us over the line on a 1-6 to 1-5 scoreline. Credit must go to our defence and goalkeeper who worked tirelessly throughout. The result was a surprise to some but as Padraig O’Hora said at the end of the Mayo v. Dublin semi-final “we have only one plan”. The result against Ballintubber left us with a winner-takes-all clash against neighbours Westport for a place in the county semi-final. At this stage there was plenty of knocks, niggles and fatigue setting in, but we had to re-focus for one last time. Like the Ballintubber game, our opposition started brighter and kicked over five unanswered points to leave us five behind before Dean Staunton found the net just before the interval to leave us just two points down. Westport started the brighter in the second half and had chances to pull away in the game along with an excellent penalty save from goalkeeper Louis Corcoran which gave the team a great lift. At this stage the lads were working extremely hard in roasting hot conditions. Micheal Regan, Luke Durkan, Aaron Bourke, DJ Keane and Evan O’Grady when re-introduced, putting in a great shift and showing leadership as elder statesmen in the team. There was time for one late twist when Declan Moore stood up to kick the winner to great scenes of joy in Westport to give us a 1-4 to 0-6 victory. You could name more lads who were terrific throughout the day, but it really was a squad effort from the 19 lads, who then booked a spot in the semi-final the following day against Ardnaree in the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan. On Sunday morning, all roads led to Bekan for the county semi-final at 11am versus Ardnaree. The lads in black and white started brightly with an early Aaron Bourke score to settle any nerves. After that, even though we had the bulk of possession, Ardnaree ran up a five points to one lead before Dean Staunton kept us in touch with a white flag. At the break we trailed five points to two. In the second half it was a tough battle with the north Mayo men and both teams had chances. Luke Durkan kept us in touch with a point, but Ardnaree pulled away further with a goal on the break. A late Dean Staunton goal was not enough to get us back into the game as we fell short to a 1-6 to 1-3 defeat. Credit must go to the whole team who put in a great effort over the two days and they should be proud of their efforts. Special mention must go to Rory Kilcoyne who broke his clavicle in the Ballintubber match. We wish Rory a speedy recovery. Squad: Louis Corcoran, Rory Kilcoyne, DJ Keane, Darragh O’Grady, Oran Grimley, John Murphy (capt.) Aaron Murray, Micheál Regan, Martynas Grimalia, Declan Moore, Luke Durkan, Aaron Bourke, Evan O’Grady, Cormac O’Malley, Dean Staunton, Aodán Feehan, Alex Kenning, Patrick Feehan, Shane Lavelle and Logan Hearty. Manager: Sean Barrett Coaches: Declan Ryan, Darragh Keaveney, Stephen Staunton and Davy Feehan.
