  • Heartbreak for our U14s

Burrishoole 4-8 Kilmeena 2-8 Our U14s fell just short in their efforts to make the D Division Championship final on a fine evening away to our old rivals Burrishoole. After storming into a five-point lead after ten minutes, Burrishoole hit back with a couple of points and goals, leaving us four points down at half time. After the break, Burrishoole extended their lead by another couple of points but our boys dug in and reduced the deficit to just two points. Both teams missed chances but it was Burrishoole who emerged victorious, winning by six points in the end. Missing four players, it was nonetheless a spirited Kilmeena performance and despite their disappointment and exhaustion at the final whistle they should be proud of their efforts, not just for this game, but for the entire season. We wish Burrishoole the best of luck in their upcoming final against Swinford. Back row, left to right: Luke O'Donnell, Tadhg Daly, Darragh McDonnell, Jamie Durkan, Tom Cox, Kevin Hastings, Felix Zeray, Robbie Murphy, Darragh Mulchrone Front row, left to right: Jason Lawless, Finn Mulchrone, Noah Coughlan, Charlie Geoghegan, Billy Lane, Cian Moran, Liam Quinn, Lorcan Lane, Ryan Cannon

  • Good win for Kilmeena Ladies

Kilmeena Junior ladies took on the Balla ladies in the last round of the Frank Kelly Memorial League on Friday 30th June. Balla were the table toppers and the only undefeated team left in the league. Balla started very strong cutting through the Kilmeena defence with their running game, showing exactly why the are undefeated. It took the Kilmeena ladies a while to settle into the game but they slowly started to get the better of Balla. Points from Shannon Bourke, Ciara Joyce, Lisa Hastings and Katie Hogan had the ladies ahead before a superb palmed in goal from captain Julia Sztejner had the ladies ahead by 1-08 to 0-02 at half time. However, but for a high wides tally by Balla and a few brilliant saves from Ellen O’Toole and a clearance off the line by Maureen Joyce, it could have been a very different story. Balla were stronger in the second half and managed to rattle the Kilmeena net, but once again a high wides tally proved to be very costly. Points from Shannon Bouke and 2 pointed frees from Ciara Joyce helped keep Kilmeena ahead. Our Polish exPat Aine Regan made a welcome return off the bench in the second half. A hard fought but well earned win for the Kilmeena ladies.

  • Shrule Gencorrib 4-4 Kilmeena 5-10

Kilmeena U14s bounced back from last week's disappointing display against Moy Davitts with a convincing win over Shrule Glencorrib in the second round of the Championship. Kilmeena led at half time by 14 points but a chaotic final 10 minutes saw Shrule Glencorrib work their way back into the game. Kilmeena had done enough though and eventually won by nine points. Scenes that we do not want to see repeated after the final whistle left a bad taste in the mouth but on the positive side, there was much to be encouraged about with good football played for most of the game and this result sets up a crucial home encounter against Kiltimagh next Monday.

  • Kilmeena GAA Men’s Health Week Event 2023-06-16

Throughout the county, there have been events for Men’s Health Week. On Friday evening, Kilmeena GAA Club held a men’s health talk in the clubhouse. The men in attendance listened to the personal stories and lived experiences of two great men. Pat O’Donnell known so well to us all told us of his personal story and shared his experience of a cardiac event in his life. A story which made us all look at and recognise unnecessary pressures in our lives. Thank you Pat for sharing your story. Martin McHugh, Leitrim GAA legend detailed his personal journey through testicular and prostate cancer. The comradeship and support from his GAA club and team strengthened his determination to do battle with his cancer and get back on the pitch. Thank you Martin for sharing your story. In the background, was Avril the nurse from Croi who is a genius with a blood pressure cuff. All our men in attendance were offered free cardiac screening and advice on how to make small changes in their lives to improve their cardiac health. Thank you to our speakers Martin and Pat for sharing your stories. To Croi and Avril for providing the cardiac screening. Thank you to our Healthy Club team for organising this event. This current phase of GAA Healthy Club project comes to an end in August. Thank you everyone for supporting all the initiatives undertaken by the Healthy Club team since the start of this current phase of the project. Report: Noreen Johnston more...
