Report by Darren Madden Kilmeena Gaa hosted St Josephs GAA club from Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire at St Brendans Park on Saturday the 26th May. It was a wonderful day of sport and the weather was fantastic. There were games being played on three separate fields and there was great support from both clubs for the boys and girls. St Josephs travelled with 250 people including players. This was some achievement for a club to travel so strong with so many age groups, boys U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-17, girls U-12 and U-17. Kilmeena Gaa did not let the side down and showed tremendous hospitality to our visitors. I would like to thank all that helped out on the day that helped make it such a success . We would also like to thank our travelling Refs and the order of Malta for their help. These are great memorable days for our players and shows the true spirIt of Gaelic games. U16 Boys Gaelic Football League – Division 2 Final. Tuesday 22nd May, 2018 Kilmeena vs Knockmore Breaffy was the host venue for this Division 2 Final between Kilmeena & Knockmore. Weather conditions were ideal for this game of football – it was dry and sunny with only a very light breeze. As soon as the ball was thrown in (7.05pm,) the game took on a frantic pace of play. Neither team was willing to give an inch and both defences were to the fore in these early stages. So much so, that any score from open play became a rarity in the opening 30 minutes. In fact most of the first half scores came from frees. Both sides missed opportunities to register points. Any attempt by Knockmore to grab a major was smothered by the trojan work of the Kilmeena defence; in particular the superb blocking and interceptions of Tom Smythe, Oisin Grimley and Adam Sheridan. At the other end, Mark Hastings was through on goal only to be denied by the Knockmore goalie, who pulled off a superb save. At the end of a pulsating and entertaining first half, the gap between the sides was just 2 points; Knockmore; 0 - 6, Kilmeena; 0 - 4. If the first half of a somewhat low scoring 30 minutes of play was about points, then the second half was about goals – scored at crucial times.......... The first of those goals came from the boot of Chris McGlynn, following a determined trademark run through the middle. This score, coming some 4 minutes into the second half was a major boost and gave Kilmeena a one point lead for the second time in the contest. Shortly afterwards, Knockmore pointed to level the match again. Kilmeena’s only point of the second half came from the efforts of Liam Moore, who came on (corner forward) early in the second half. With about ten minutes remaining, Kilmeena were on the attack again, only to be turned over and the resulting fast counter-attack by Knockmore yielded a goal for the North Mayo side. Knockmore were back in front but Kilmeena responded; with a second goal of the evening for Chris McGlynn. The game was now there for the taking by either team but it was Knockmore that got the crucial point to edge Kilmeena into second place. Kilmeena did have chances to tie and maybe even sneak a win in those final moments but Knockmore held on to win by the slimmest of margins. So, a fantastic performance by this Kilmeena U16 side, playing in a very competitive Division 2 league. Knockmore won a final, one in which they had to battle every second to realise. In the end only the minimal score could separate these sides and no doubt the Kilmeena lads, although understandably disappointed at the final whistle, will emerge stronger from this experience. U16 Boys Gaelic Football League – Division 2 Semi-Final. Monday 14th May, 2018 Kilmeena vs Moy Davitts Kilmeena travelled to Foxford to play Bohola Moy Davitts, on their home-turf. Weatherwise, conditions were ideal for football – dry with a light breeze and spells of sunshine. The home side were first off the mark, scoring a point inside the opening minutes. Kilmeena responded with a superbly taken point by Ian Murphy. This was followed up soon afterwards by the games only Goal, that from the boot of Mikey Hastings. As the first half progressed, both sides enjoyed spells of good possession. However, both teams were also guilty of poor decision making/shot selection; which yielded a spectacle of mediocre quality. A brace of well taken frees from Ronan O’Donnell and the exchange of a couple of scores by each team, gave a scoreline of 1 – 5 to 0 – 4 in favour of the visitors at the small whistle. The second half continued in the same vain as the first half with both sides struggling to convert possession into scores. In the end, Moy Davitts did manage to outscore the visitors by one point – 5 points to Kilmeena’s 4 points. Due to reseeding work on the Ballycroy pitch, the Junior Championship game between Ballycroy and Kilmeena this Sunday the 20th May will be played in Bangor at 2:00 pm. Your support would be appreciated.

The Annual Paddy Golden Blitz will take place on Saturday 16th June at 10am. This is an under 10 Boys blitz and is open to all under 10 West Mayo Clubs. If your club would like to enter a team please contact Trish on 086 8281455. Under10 Girls blitz will also take place but this will be for local clubs only. More details in the coming weeks.

It has been brought to the Clubs attention that there is a reluctance by parents to get involved and help out with umpiring or to do linesman/woman on match evenings/days and especially when our own Club is playing at home.This is unfair on your child/children and on the Management team who cannot be expected to do this task. We are requesting parents from hereon, to make themselves available to do these jobs when asked by a member of the team management, and it is a tremendous way to become involved and encourage your child and the team.

Report by Colm Barrett Kilmeena LGFC were selected for the 2018 Gaelic 4 Teens programme which commenced at the end of February last. The programme is a participation-based initiative run over 8 weeks aimed at increasing the retention rate of teenage girls aged 15-17 years in clubs. It is essential to create a clear player pathway in every club and it is vital that all clubs invest time in recruiting and retaining teenage girls in their structures. Through the Gaelic4Teens initiative clubs are provided with a new and fun avenue to retain these players usually subject to an increased level of dropout. Just a brief overview the programme will work closely with coaches, influencing the content of their coaching sessions as well as establishing the best ways for coaches to communicate with their players. The programme will be monitored and evaluated to ensure that it achieves the aim of having a direct impact on the retention of players. As well as tailoring training sessions, there is a focus on education that will see star inter-county players Sharon Courtney (Monaghan), Cliodhna O’Connor (ex-Dublin), and Orlagh Farmer (Cork)assisted by William Harmon (Kerry)National Development Of provide expertise and advice to participants throughout the duration of the programme. The research that prompted the development of the Gaelic4Teens programme revealed that players play for enjoyment, to keep fit and healthy, to relieve stress and because their friends also play. The reasons highlighted for giving up the sport are that they don’t get enough playing time, there is no fun at training, that it is too competitive and that they are treated differently. The aims of the Gaelic4Teens Programme are - To increase the retention rates of teenage girls playing Ladies Gaelic football in a club. To provide a unique programme of Ladies Gaelic Football activities to attract girls aged 15-17 years. To educate coaches in relation to the needs and interests of teenage girls in sport. U16 Boys Gaelic Football League – Division 2, Round 7. Tuesday 8th May, 2018 Kilmeena v Breaffy In this final round match, Kilmeena were away to Breaffy. Throw-in was set for 7pm and a win here would guarantee Kilmeena a semi-final spot in the division. Weather conditions were dry with a light breeze; providing an ideal evening for football. With Breaffy setting up defensively, good scoring opportunities were at a premium during the early stages of the game and the first quarter had elapsed before Ian Murphy got Kilmeena on the scoreboard. Breaffy responded soon afterwards with a point from a free. Round about the 20 minute mark, Kian Moore felt unwell and had to leave the field. His replacement, Harry Sheridan slotted in at full forward and it wasn’t long before he landed Kilmeena’s first goal. Kilmeena tapped on 4 further points and Breaffy 2 points to give a half time scoreline of 1 – 5 to 3 points in favour of the visitors. Kian Moore returned to the field of play for the second half and Kilmeena continued to press the Breaffy defence. A high looping ball into the Breaffy goal mouth area was fisted into the back of the net by Sean Prenty, to give the visitors a positive start to the second half. This was followed shortly afterwards by another major from the boot of Jason McGlynn. The Kilmeena lads were now cruising but Breaffy mounted a fightback and through a combination of scores from open play and a number of pointed frees, the home side were back to within 3 points of the visitors. It was then that the Kilmeena lads had to dig a little deeper - defending resolutely for the final 5 minutes of the contest. In the dying minutes of the contest, Kilmeena broke forward into the Breaffy half of the field, utilising excellent running play and a final pass to Sean Prenty; who blasted the ball to the Breaffy net, to seal the result for the visitors. So a good away win for Kilmeena. Next up – a Semi Final contest away to Bohola Moy Davitts, on Monday 14th May, 2018. Kilmeena U-14 boys played Moy Davitts on Thursday evening the 10th May. Both teams were evenly matched in a closely contested game from the throw in. Some great skill was displayed from both sides considering the difficult conditions with a strong breeze blowing across the field. Kilmeena LGFA are very thankful to Mulloy Shellfish for sponsoring gear bags to our girls travelling to Abbestown tommorow 12th May. The girls are taking part in the "Gaelic4teens" event.
