Although Kilmeena U16s lost this clash by 13 points, there were many positives to be drawn from this performance. Seven of 18 players from the panel were missing, either through injury or illness, and we had to call up four 14s to field a 13-a-side team. Playing on a sticky pitch after torrential rain, the boys battled hard to stay in touch with The Neale in the first half. While we trailed by five points, 1-4 to 0-2, at half time, there was at least a sense that we could get something from the game. After the break, the lads kept the ball in hand and enjoy some good possession but The Neale took their chances and scored some fine points from distance. While we had plenty of chances of our own, unfortunately we couldn’t convert them all. There were some fine individual performances and special mention must be made of the U14s who showed great energy and grit in difficult playing conditions. Our next game is at home to Naomh Padraig next Thursday, 18th April.

We had our first home game of the league on Thursday 25th March . On a nice spring evening for football, we took a heavy defeat to a strong Swinford outfit ! While the result was equally disappointing to our first outing against Tourmakeady, the performance was very different. We were much improved in nearly all aspects including our attitude, as we kept playing to our best right to the end, We're confident that this season will turn for us , we have injured players to come back and intensity of training has improved !

The finalised Kilmeena GAA Club Purpose, Values and Visions will be presented for ratification and it will be explained and discussed in detail. The night will also include facilitation for each coaching team (from U 6’s upwards) in the creation of their own ‘Coaching Team Charter’ which is to be aligned to ‘The Kilmeena Coaching Way’. The purpose of this activity is to help coaches create clarity and alignment within their coaching teams and to ensure that each coaching team is feeding into the bigger picture. The vision is that as coaches and coaching teams we are rowing in the same direction with a sense of cohesion and purpose. Each coaching team will be facilitated to gain clarity on such areas as: ● What is success for our coaching team? ● What do we want to well as a coaching team? ● What are the roles and responisilties within our coaching team? ● What are the key skills and playing principles we want to focus on for the year ahead and how are we going to coach them? In brief, If we want to go fast, we should go alone… but if we want to far, we must go together.

Representing your country in any capacity is a privilege and an honour most of us can only dream of. However, for Pat Mulchrone, a regular member of the Mayo Gaelic Masters (over 40) team, this dream has become a reality. He had the honour and privilege of representing his club and county on the recent Ireland International Rules Series squad that played against the visiting AFL Masters. He was also selected to captain the Over-50s team for the first test match in Charlestown. This event was memorable for Pat, his family, and his friends, who supported him worldwide. In the months leading up to the Aussies' visit, Pat and his teammates trained hard and prepared well for the tournament. Adjusting to the AFL compromise rules took some getting used to, but the Irish teams adapted well to the rule changes on the field, and they won comfortably against the Aussies in both test games. Pat credits the tournament's success to the meticulous preparation for the visit of the AFL Masters by Gaelic Masters Association Chairman John Pat Sheridan and his backroom team. Organising the arrangements for three visiting Aussie teams—an Over-40s and 50s men's team and, for the first time, an over-40s ladies' team—was no small feat. Well done, Pat Mulchrone. It was a fantastic and unique accomplishment for you and your family! Leading the Ireland Gaelic Masters onto the field for the first Test match against the visiting AFL Masters team was an honour for Pat.

Kilmeena had their first outing as a Senior Club against Breaffy in the Kelly Cup competition following their promotion to the senior ranks after winning the County Intermediate title in 2023. While recording a loss by two points to the long-established Breaffy Senior Club, they can be justifiably proud of their individual and team performance. Even though both teams fielded well short of their regular players, it was an opportunity for the young cohort of players to display their football skills and lay down a marker for future selection in the forthcoming games in the Kelly Cup. A nightmarish opening 18 minutes in horrendous conditions, during which we conceded 3-9, ensured that the points went to Tourmakeady for Kilmeena U16s' opening League Div. 3 match. Our boys tried their best to contain this slick Tourmakeady side but found it difficult to contain their relentless running and link-up play. After the initial rout, our lads steadied the ship somewhat with some heroic defending and had a few half chances of their own before the welcome half-time whistle. The lads came out fighting after the break and actually outpointed Tourmakeady in the second half, leaving the final score Tourmakeady 3-13, Kilmeena 1-2. Our annual Dinner Dance was held on Saturday 3rd February in The Castlecourt Hotel. As always, the event was an opportunity for all club members and the community to socialise and celebrate our clubs achievements throughout the year. Well done to all the U14 boys who took part in the Movember Ahead of the Game workshop. Movember ‘Ahead of the Game’ is a youth mental health program. It teaches players, parents, coaches, and volunteers to understand mental health, build mental fitness and strengthen resilience.
