A last minute Islandeady goal was the difference in our U14 C Championship match in Islandeady. Despite being five points down at half time, our boys rallied in the second half and moved six points clear with just seven minutes to go. Islandeady upped the pressure, however, and drew level before hitting the net with just seconds remaining. We wish Islandeady the best of luck in the next round of the competition. The Minor ladies travelled to Castlebar on a very warm and humid evening 09th August for the Shield semi-final. The game was played at 13 a side due to illness and injury in the Kilmeena camp. Kilmeena struck the first blow with a goal from Amy Carney. However, Castlebar were very strong and responded well scoring 3 goals without reply. The Kilmeena defence were kept very busy with Castlebar a constant threat going forward. Points from Amy Carney, Lisa Hastings and Leah Walsh helped to reduce the defecit. The second half was a much more even contest with Castlebar using all their subs, this had an unsettling effect on the home team which allowed Kilmeena get a grip on the game. Final score was Castlebar 6-14 Kilmeena 2-10. That’s the end of the 2023 campaign for the Kilmeena minor ladies. We have to say a massive thanks to all the U16 girls who stepped up this year and put in a massive effort.

The Kilmena minor ladies hosted Louisburgh in the final round of the championship on Wedneday evening 02/Aug. Low on numbers due to illness and injury, Kilmeena could only field 13 players with the help of the U16 girls. The Kilmeena ladies got off to a bright start scoring the first point before Katie Moran snr scored a cracking goal from well out the field. Louisburgh started to fight back chipping away at the Kilmeena lead. Eventually the Louisburgh ladies took the lead and never looked back. However the Kilmeena ladies fought to the final whistle. Some wonderful defending by Laura O’Grady, Siofra Hughes, Aine Gallagher, Katie Moran jnr and Abbie Quinn along with some brilliant saves from Ellen O’Toole kept the scores to a minimum. Another cracking goal from Katie Moran and Amy Carney along with points from Lisa Hastings, Katie and Amy kept the score board operator busy. Kilmeena were always threatening going forward, with some penetrating runs from Leah Walsh, Katie Moran snr and Lisa Hastings keeping the Louisburgh defence busy. It was not to be for the Kilmeena ladies but a fantastic performance entertained the large crowd in attendance. Final score Louisburgh 4-16, Kilmeena 3-09.

Well done to the Kilmeena ladies that fielded a team against Ballyhaunis in the first round of the Group C minor Championship. Kilmeena were tight on numbers with just 15 available to play. Special thanks to the nine U-16 girls that stepped up to play alongside their under 18 team mates this evening. Kilmeena opted to play with the wind in the first half. Lisa Hastings (1-03(1xF), Grace Gibbons (0-02) and Leah Walsh (0-01) got some fine scores from play. Halftime score was 1–06 to 3-04 in favour of Ballyhaunis. Despite Kilmeena’s best efforts in the second half, the larger panel of players from Ballyhaunis made a difference where they pulled away, outscoring the home side by 3-03 to 0-02. Running from deep, the energetic Aine Gallagher got Kilmeena’s only two scores in the second half. Final score was Kilmeena 1-08 to Ballyhaunis 6-07. Congratulations to Ballyhaunis and best of luck with the remainder of the competition.

The Kilmeena U16 Boys team travelled north last Thursday night (20th of July) for an evening fixture against Knockmore in the Homeland U16 C Shield semi-final. We elected to play with a slight breeze in the first half, and thanks to the relatively dry conditions, both sides showcased their ability and fitness to their highest levels. Knockmore looked to push on early, but scores throughout the half from Cormac O'Malley and a late point from Cormac Slattery saw our boys keep in touch and trail by just two points at the break. Half time score: Knockmore 0-7 Kilmeena 0-5 Throughout the third quarter of the game, Knockmore looked set to pull away and despite a Brendon Witzl goal, the home team led by as many as eight points midway through the second half. But our lads never gave up, and the lead was cut to two when a lob into the box found Kyle Mulchrone, who got a hand to the high ball to tip it over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the back of the net. However, Knockmore rallied once more down the field and bagged a goal and a few points of their own to push their lead back out. A late Adam Moran free kick found Brendon Witzl in the box, who slotted the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the day, but it proved to be no more than a consolation as the referee promptly blew the final whistle, leaving Knockmore to advance to the final next week in Claremorris, where they will take on Tourmakeady. Burrishoole 4-8 Kilmeena 2-8 Our U14s fell just short in their efforts to make the D Division Championship final on a fine evening away to our old rivals Burrishoole. After storming into a five-point lead after ten minutes, Burrishoole hit back with a couple of points and goals, leaving us four points down at half time. After the break, Burrishoole extended their lead by another couple of points but our boys dug in and reduced the deficit to just two points. Both teams missed chances but it was Burrishoole who emerged victorious, winning by six points in the end. Missing four players, it was nonetheless a spirited Kilmeena performance and despite their disappointment and exhaustion at the final whistle they should be proud of their efforts, not just for this game, but for the entire season. We wish Burrishoole the best of luck in their upcoming final against Swinford.
