Kilmeena Welcomes Home Double Silver Medallist - Aoife Keane 2026-06-21

The Parish of Kilmeena proudly welcomed home Aoife Keane, who returned in triumph as a double silver medallist from the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games 2026 in 10 Pin Bowling, held in Dublin last weekend. The homecoming route, stretching from Michael Gavin's at Barley Hill to the White Gates and onto the Buckfield Inn, was lined with bonfires, flags, and fireworks as Aoife and her entourage received an
emotional, deeply moving welcome, marked by resounding cheers from the gathered crowd.
This was not Aoife's first experience of success at this level. In 2014, she represented Connacht at a competition in Limerick, where she claimed a Bronze Medal in 10 Pin Bowling. The medal presentation was conducted by renowned Irish international rugby player Keith Woods, with celebrated sports
broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh also in attendance — a fitting stage for a remarkable young athlete.
Aoife began her journey in bowling at the Castlebar Bowling Alley and also participated in bocce at the Leisure Centre in Westport, where her coaches first recognised her exceptional natural talent. Her dedication over the intervening years has been rewarded with selection to represent Connacht on the national stage.
For the 2026 games, Aoife was once again selected to represent Connacht, with the selection process taking place earlier in the year across 12 venues to accommodate 12 different sporting events. The opening ceremony was performed by Ireland's President, Catherine Connolly, at Tallaght Stadium, Dublin, marking a prestigious occasion befitting Aoife's significant achievement in competing at this level.
For her parents, Jim and Maureen, as well as her brothers Nicholas and James, and sister Tracie, this was a moment of immense and well-deserved pride. Aoife embodies the spirit of the Special Olympics Athlete Oath: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." — a sentiment that speaks to us all.
The Parish of Kilmeena stands firmly behind Aoife with enormous pride, and there is little doubt that the bonfires will burn again when she returns from future competitions. We wish her every continued success on the road ahead.
