Cill Comhain: 3 - 03 Kilmeena: 1 – 08
Kilmeena made the long journey to north Mayo for Round 5of the Adult League, on Sunday 26th April 2026, where Cill Comhain were both hosts and opponents.
In a game that Kilmeena should have won and a contest that was refereed in a manner resembling orchestrated bias in favour of the hosts, the weather conditions were about the only aspect of this encounter one would care to remember.
Kilmeena dominated possession in the first half, so much so that it took the hosts fifteen minutes to get the ball out of their own half of the field. But for all their possession superiority, Kilmeena had just four points to show for the first quarter of an hour’s work. This was made all the more frustrating by the fact that when Cill Comhain did manage to get into the Kilmeena half of the pitch, their first score was a goal.
Despite a failure to convert many scoring chances, Kilmeena did lead by the slimmest of margins at the small whistle on a scoreline of 0 – 05 to 1 – 01.
The second half continued in a similar vein, a low scoring ‘war-of attrition’, twenty-seven (27) minutes of football – yes,I know………..the LGFA rules say its thirty minutes per half (plus added injury time). But with the visitors having gained a bit of momentum, closing the gap to within one point and the ball now in the Cill Comhain half of the field, well…..anything could happen. And it seems the hometown referee couldn’t take this risk, that or else a new watch is required.
To their credit, the Kilmeena ladies continued to play with tremendous effort right up to the (premature) final whistle and the visitors registered 1 – 03 in the second period. Despite the Kilmeena efforts, Cill Comhain scored two majors in the second half and this provided them with a scoreboard advantage of one point at the final whistle.
The refereeing aside, all involved with Kilmeena today will recognise that we can produce a much better performancethan this. So, it’s onwards and upwards!!
