Local League Final

The local league for National schools and first years in secondary schools has been ongoing now for the past three Sunday mornings and it concluded with the finals being played at Carrowholly  school pitch on Sunday, December 9, 2012. The players represented the schools of Fahy, Myna and Carrowholly, along with some first years from Rice College. This league was organised to commemorate the memory of William Quinn and Declan Gibbons. The games were played in ideal weather conditions and it was great to see so many parents present supporting their children. After the leagues were completed, a skills test of all the players present was undertaken, again this was most enjoyable. The William Quinn cup and the Declan Gibbons cup were presented to the respective winners and each player received a medal in recognition of their participation. Former Kilmeena player and now Westport and Mayo player Lee Keegan was present with his all star award to present medals. We are extremely thankful to Lee for performing this task.

Afterwards refreshments were provided for children and adults. A big thank you to everyone involved in organizing and running this worthwhile event. Thanks to the sponsors for their support and hopefully the running of these leagues will bring back happy memories for the two families.

Bord na nÓg

<p">Kilmeena Bord na nÓg held its AGM on Tuesday, December 4,2012. The meeting was very well attended and it is heartening to see the level of support in Bord na nÓg for the provision of Gaelic football for the children of Kilmeena and Fahy. A review of the past year took place and recommendations and suggestions to further improve on how our activities are delivered were made. Team managers for the coming year were selected and will be finalised in the coming weeks, they will be entered on our web site with contact details for ease of communication. A discussion was also held on the establishment of an under age girls football team, the consensus of the meeting was very positive and it was felt that the best approach was to invite parents to a meeting early in the New Year to gauge the level of parental support and especially female support.

The chairman Willie Keaveney, thanked everyone involved in Bord na nÓg for their effort during the year Trish Hogan secretary, all the team managers, and the coaching officer Michael Gavin. He also thanked Martin McIntire for his work in promoting the game and the excellent photos from the various games on the web site. He also thanked the club officers for their help and support during the course of the year Michael Carney, Damien Hughes and Neil O’ Donnell.

The following officers were elected for the coming year:

Chairman: Willie Keaveney;

Vice Chairman: Michael O’ Grady;

Secretary: Trish Hogan;

Coaching Officer: Michael Gavin;

Children’s Officer: Ollie Mulchrone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kilmeena Bord na nÓg, has been re-established after a period in limbo in which the activities of the underage structure were overseen by the executive of the club at senior level.

At an AGM held on the 16th of November, 2011 the following officers were elected to take charge of Bord na nÓg. Chairman; Willie Keaveney, Secretary; Trish Hogan, Coaching Officer; Michael Gavin, Youth Officer; Tómas Gill, Childrens Officers; Willie Keaveney/Trish Hogan and Club Photographer; Martin Mc Intyre.

To date, Bord na nÓg has been active in preparing for the coming season. We have undertaken a Child Protection course, which was delivered to us at the clubhouse on December last by Mr Oliver Moran and Charlie Lambert of the Mayo Sports Partnership.

All our coaches and personnel involved with the children are Garda Vetted. On the 26th January, we organised an introductory night for coaches. 21 coaches turned out on the night for this worthwhile exercise which was given by Billy McNicholas, Eugene Lavin and Eoin Sweeney. We had a number of female coaches at this introduction and this is a most welcome development in the club. As a follow on from this, most of the coaches involved with the underage teams have undertaken the Foundation Coaching course at McHale Park, Castlebar. This augers well for the future development of Gaelic games within the club.

We held our registration night on the 9th of February. The club officers and managers were on hand to meet parents, players and light refreshments were served. A big thank you to all involved.

On registration night, we asked parents/players to sign up to a Code of Conduct for the coming year. We also asked parents for consent to photograph the children in order to promote the game and to be included on newspapers or the club website. This was done in line with a Child Protection Policy that has been developed by the club officers and introduced this year. This has all been done to ensure that the children coming to the pitch to train or take part in matches, do so in a safe fun filled enviroment with the best qualified personnel leading and coaching them. As can be seen this has been a busy couple of months. There is now in place teriffic people who will oversee the club go from strength to strenght in the coming years. There is a certain buzz around the clubhouse once again with great expectations for the coming year.

Nil neart le go cur le cheile.
